Here’s a portrait of Joanna. She’s a very well loved member of her community. She has gone out of her way to help a lot of people. She’s spent a lot of time in community service as well as being involved in her church. She’s married and has three daughters. I’ve tried to portray her personality in this painting.

Today I finished the portrait of Melinda. I do a lot of portrait commissions. Many are from a photo the client gives me. Some are from the person posing for me. Melinda sat for me. It took about four sittings of a half-hour each. I just worked from emotion. Sometimes if I try too hard, it loses it’s magic and is boring. This one captured her personality.

This portrait was done quickly and in an impressionist style. I find I’m more satisfied with my work when I’m free and loose with my paint strokes. There’s more of an emotion when I do it that way.

Cape San Blas is part of a peninsula in Gulf County, Florida extending westward from the mainland of Florida, separating St. Joseph Bay to the north from the Gulf Of Mexico to the south. It has a beautiful beach. There are no hotels there, but there are several beach houses. It is an unspoiled location, prime for families and people who want to enjoy nature.

Most of the portraits I do are from photos — people just don’t have time for sittings. In this case, I had Traci sit for me six or seven very short times. It was really relaxed and was a three-quarter view, meaning she was looking slightly sideways, not straight forward or a profile. I had the chance to just paint my emotions rather than trying to do a photo-realistic portrayal. The painting is impressionistic. I enjoyed doing it. Traci was a really fun model.

Claude Monet settled in a small town in France called Giverny. His home is still there. Tourists flock to the location to see his gardens and lily pond. This painting shows the street which is steps away from his home. I had visited there with my wife and my daughter’s family. I loved going to the Monet estate, but was enthralled by the little French village. It had been raining and the reflections in the wet roads added to the magic of the place.
