In My Pretty Garden
When I was a little boy, I loved a song called “In the Leafy Treetops.” The second verse says “In my pretty garden the flowers are nodding. They’re first to see the sun they must tell everyone, in my pretty garden the flowers are nodding.” (Children’s Songbook, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). My own wildflower gardens are so beautiful and they make me very happy.
The use of contrast gives drama to the painting. The background is dark, the petals are light. I painted this as though I was at ground level rather than looking down from above.

I love this painting so much! I love the contrast and how it appears as if light is shining through the hairs on the stems.

Tom – your work continues to get stronger and stronger – the gorgeous colors in “Salad” – the beautiful stroke work and melancholy feeling evoked by “Harbor Rain” and now these wonderful flowers! I’ve been a fan for years – my respect and admiration for your work continues to grow!

I love your flower paintings. This one is just beautiful! So much depth and contrast that I feel I could reach out and pick a flower.
